Gopinath Nagaraj

Mr. Gopinath Nagaraj is a fisheries and marine environmental aspects specialist with a wide experience in the sustainable development and management of living aquatic resources. He obtained his first degree in Aquatic Biology and Fisheries Management from University of Science, Malaysia, and his tertiary degrees from University of Philippines and Auburn University, Auburn University, United States.

He joined the Department of Fisheries, Malaysia in 1978 where he served, among other positions, as a former head of the Marine Fisheries Training Centre and a state Director of Fisheries before leaving in 1994. He then joined Syndel Asia Sdn. Bhd., a leading distributor of aquatic pharmaceuticals as its Managing Director and is the currently the Principal Consultant in FanLi Marine and Consultancy Sdn. Bhd., a leading fisheries and aquaculture consultancy company based in Malaysia.

Mr. Gopinath Nagaraj has had over 30 years of experience in the Malaysian fisheries and aquatic environmental industry. He has been involved in a wide spectrum of fisheries, aquaculture and marine environmental studies. Among these include Development of the Codes of Practice for Environmentally Sustainable Shrimp Farming and Cage Culture of Marine Fish in Malaysia (Department of Fisheries), fisheries and aquaculture development in Rural Growth Areas in Sarawak (State Planning Unit, Sarawak) and was a key contributor in the Fisheries Development Study in Malaysia (Economic Planning Unit) where he investigated issues relating to Tilapia Farming, Cockle Farming, Inland Fisheries, Recreational Fisheries, Aquarium Fisheries and Research and Development.

In addition, he was also involved in aquaculture development and feasibility studies as the Aquaculture Consultant for the Establishment of a Mollusk Hatchery in Malaysia (Ministry of Agriculture), Establishment of Marine Shrimp/Fish Farming Complexes at the HIP-ZIA Areas at Kg. Merchong, Kg. Kedaik and Kg. P. Permatang Pauh, Pahang (Ministry of Agriculture), Feasibility Study of Lobster Farming in Sarawak (Department of Agriculture, Sarawak), Malaysian Tuna Aquaculture Industry Development Study (Department of Fisheries) and Freshwater Aquaculture Industry Study in Sg. Selangor Basin (WWF-Malaysia) and Technical Audit of Existing Shrimp Farm at Carey Island, Kuala Langat, Selangor.

The list goes on and the above description is a brief snapshot of only some of the work Gopinath has been involved with in his busy career to date. He also has over 30 publications to his credit and has edited or published over 5 books on marine environment and fisheries in Malaysia. He is also an Adjunct Professor in the Central Institute for Fisheries Education (CIFE), India, a registered EIA and Subject Consultant with the Department of Environment, Malaysia, and a registered EIA Consultant with the Natural Resource and Environmental Board (NREB) Sarawak.
